Kitchen Design Principles – the Kitchen Triangle

The Kitchen Triangle: this is a well established principle to follow in kitchen design, aiming for optimum ergonomic workspace design. It must be remembered that these guiding design principles are not hard and fast rules – your own preferences and lifestyle should govern the overall design. Here are some key points to consider:

1. Location of Sink – this needs to be carefully considered to ensure minimum travel between cooker/oven/stove and the sink. It is also worth locating a dishwasher next to the sink. Preparation utensils should be stored next to the sink.

2. Location of refrigerator – ideally this equipment needs to be located at the furthest point from a source of moisture (sink) and heat (oven/stove). It is also critical that access to the refrigerator is not compromised by the proximity of other appliances

3. The cooking zone – ovens/stoves and microwaves should be located in the same zone. Large storage drawers for pots and pans are worth designing into the cooking zone. Cooking utensil storage should be designed within close proximity to the cooking zone.
